So...in my efforts to save money, I've been making my own laundry soap. It's pretty easy - and VERY cost effective - 2 parts Fels-Naptha, 1 part Arm and Hammer Washing Soda, and 1 part Borax. You use 2 tablespoons per load, and it gets the clothes as clean as the All Free 'n Clear I had been using.
Anyway, you have to grate the Fels-Naptha. No big deal; last night I got out the cheese grater, a bowl, and 3 bars of soap, and went to town. Herself saw me, decided it looked like fun, and asked if SHE could grate the soap.
Now, Herself VERY rarely offers to help do anything that takes effort. So, needless to say, I JUMPED on this: "Sure! Wanna grate some soap?"
After having to explain HOW to grate soap (Yeah....I know. Genius IQ, can't figure out the simplist stuff. That's one of the things I'll be discusisng with her doc tomorrow. :sigh:), she went to town. Got most of all 3 bars grated, too - and I now have an almost full gallon container of laundry soap, ready to use. She had fun, and thought it was neat the way we could make our own detergent. (If I wanted, I could turn it into liquid detergent, but I a)don't really have a container large enough for 6 gallons, and b)don't want to spend the time to boil 6 gallons of water. Powdered is fine)
(An aside - I have receipes for making my own dishwasher detergent, too, but Sweet Geek works for a place that makes that ("it does your hands while you do the dishes!"), and can get whatever they make for pennies on the dollar....so, I let him provide that for me.)
I was wiped out after the DVD, so we camped on the couch and watched Monty Python. Yes, I have corrupted my children. I made up for my laziness this morning, though - before leaving for work I rearranged one of my linen closet shelves, tidied the bedroom, booted up the washer, started a loaf of bread, AND loaded the dishwasher. Now I'm at work recuperating.
Tonight, I'll try to finish my linen closet, and start on the kids'. It's in quite a bit of disarray.....
