does columbia wool spin well without being carded? I don't have carders, but I know some fleeces you can spin without carding...http://lwu81.blogspot.com
I haven't tried it, but I think it would do ok, once it was scoured. It comes clean quite easily...you'd probably have to finger-tease it, but it should do just fine.
For a cheap "starter" set of carders, you can buy 2 of the "slicker" brushes from Wal-Mart or a pet store. They're smaller than traditional hand carders, but they have the same type of teeth. I've used them, and they work OK. (The ones I used were a lot more flexible than the handcards I eventually got. I actually like the slicker brushes better, but they don't hold as much fiber!)
I've spun this both on a spindle and a wheel, and it did fine. It wants to spin fine, in fact - I'm thinking socks, here.
